The Maple Syrup Season and getting the bees season off to a new start, often overlap. But this year it happened on the same day. On the last day of collecting sap, we started the bee season.
When we get new bees, due to expanding the number of hives, or replacing a lost colony, we have to be ready to act fairly quickly. The bee packages have been shipped to a central spot, often from some distance. We pick them up from the supplier for installation in a hive.
The package includes about 10,000 worker bees, along with one mated queen. The queen is in her own little cage within the package. She and the workers have just been introduced to each other when they are packaged up for shipment.
It takes a couple days for them to get to know, and accept each other. The queen gives off a pheromone that the workers eventually recognize as their queen.
When we put the bees in hive, (“hiving the bees”) we allow a few days for them to continue to acclimate with each other. In shipment, there is a little cork in the end of the queen cage. When we hive them, we replace the cork with a marshmallow. The bees will eat the marshmallow over a couple days, allowing the queen to be released.
