Hiving bees
I promised a follow-up regarding the installation of the bee packages into the hives (referred to as hiving the bees).
When we returned home from picking up the packages near Stillwater, it was a little late in the day to hive the bees. So, I took six of the eight frames out of the hives, and just set the package in the hive, without releasing them. My plan was to return the next day and do the “hiving.”
I had watched a video about three times to learn the best method for installation. Feeling comfortable with my base of knowledge, I proceeded to “dump” the bees from the cage, into the hive.
It did not go as planned!!😬😳
When I opened the cage to dump them, I had bees everywhere! The majority did end up in the hive, but about 20% were happy to be freed. I am not sure, but I think it was because of the very warm temps. It was about seventy-six degrees when I was doing the hiving, and they had been in the cage, in the hive, overnight. They just wanted to cool off—and take a dump!
I was supposed to lock them in for the night so they could continue to get acquainted with the queen, or risk absconding from the hive. But if I did that, I would lock about 2,000 bees OUTSIDE the hive. I made a management decision to NOT lock them in, hoping that the trip across the country, and the night in the cage, in the hive, would be an adequate time for acclimation to the queen.
If you look closely at the picture of the windshield of my pickup, you will see how bad they needed to find a port-a-pot. The rest of the pickup was also covered.
It was a “shit-show!”🤣🤣
P.s When I went back the next day, all was well. They had not absconded. 😎😎👏👏
