Today, May 5 is about 24 days since hiving the bees.
Assuming the queen took a few days to get released and start laying eggs, plus about 21 days from egg to hatch, it is about the right time for newly emerged bees to go to work.
It also marks the approximate date in which the size of colony starts to increase—rapidly. A worker bee’s life expectancy is about 42 days. If you recall, a new package of bees arrives with about 10,000 bees in it, ranging from a day old to 42 days old. That means, the original population falls before it can increase.
Starting about now, the colony will theoretically grow by about 1,500 to 2,000 bees per day for about the next 42 days. The population will reach a stabilized number from 65,000 to as high as 80,000. For us, this is good timing, as the population will be good at the time the Basswood is blooming.
What you see here, is new “forager” bees getting ready to go out to forage for pollen and nectar. The first thing they do, when they leave the hive, is to do an “orientation flight.” This allows them to know what hive to return to, when coming back from collecting pollen or nectar.
The bees do a “dance” in front of the hive, that looks a bit like flying in a figure-eight formation. This dance—or orientation flight—is how they know to which hive to return.

Yesterday was three weeks since hiving the packages of bees that we received on 4-10-25.
It was time to take a look to evaluate the progress of the new colonies. My objective was to check on the progress of the colony. I am very satisfied with what I saw. Below, are two good images of eggs/larvae and capped brood.
There were two good frames of capped brood (developing bees waiting to emerge), larvae (the stage following the egg) and eggs in each hive. All good signs that things are going well.
While there is plenty of pollen present from the trees and other emerging plants, there were still no dandelions present. I am sure that will change this weekend, when we could see temps near 80. Pollen is high in protein, necessary for reproduction.
Soon thereafter, we will also see various forest plants in bloom—along with fruit trees—to provide nectar for the making of honey. But the really nectar run, will be in late June and early July, when the Basswood is blooming.
